Southern Choctaw finished the 2015 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Southern Choctaw finished seventh in Class 2A region one with a 1-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Indians lost as many games as in any season since 2008. The defense allowed a team record 320 points last season. Southern Choctaw was inconsistent offensively last year and that needs to pick up if the Indians want to be competitive. They only averaged 16.7 points a game. Since 2010, Southern Choctaw has gone a combined 34-30. Their 53.0% winning percentage ranks 24th in Class 2A over the past six seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Southern Choctaw has managed to compile a record of 183-105. Their 64.0% winning percentage ranks 8th in Class 2A and 66th in the AHSAA. The Indians are led by head coach Jeremy Noland who is entering his eighth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 38-36 over the past seven seasons at Southern Choctaw. Under his direction the Indians have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Noland. Coach Noland's overall record as a head football coach in seven season stands at 38-36 (51.4%). The Southern Choctaw Indians will play in Class 2A region one during the 2016 season. The Indians will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region one this season. Southern Choctaw has failed to qualify for the playoffs since 2012 but hope to return to the post season this year. Running back Deonte McGrew returns for his sophomore season after rushing for 860 yards and 6 touchdowns last year. Te Indians also return Matthew Hill for his senior season after he rushed for 728 yards and scored 8 touchdowns. The Indians open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Excel on Friday, August 26 at Panther Stadium. Last year the Excel Panthers finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in seventh place in Class 3A region one. The Panthers ended last season on a positive note with a win over J.U. Blacksher by a score of 31-16 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Southern Choctaw and Excel have met a total of 15 times on the football field. The Indians have a 9-6-0 record against the Panthers. They last met in 2009 with Excel winning by a score of 21-18. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
